For this project I created a 5 piece pre-fall contemporary fashion collection. I took inspiration mainly from brain coral formations, deriving the title “Diploria labyrinthiformis” from a brain coral’s scientific name. A main inspirational artist for this work is Neri Oxman and her use of material ecology to explore form on the body. I transferred this notion onto the usage of bio-couture and technologically advanced yet sustainable materials such as kombucha SCOBY leather and liquid printing to mimic the coral’s undulations. I also wanted to include use of expanding foam and black sheer fabric to accentuate the forms of the body as they relate to these growing organisms. This project includes a final collection board, flats board, and mood board, along with preliminary/ research sketches. Alcohol based marker, paint marker, ink. 2021.
